Honours and Awards

to men who served during the war and met the
qualification laid down for the medal.
Men who served overseas were
entitled to one or more campaign medal:

served in France and Flanders between 5
August and 22 November 1914. |

The Bronze version of

|

Awarded to men in
the Territorial Force before 30 September

If a man's service was only in
the U.K. he was not awarded a medal. He could,
however, be entitled to a Silver War Badge.
|
Silver War Badge
|
 |
Authorised in September 1916. It was a
circular badge awarded to a man who was
discharged due to wounds received or
sickness contracted. Unlike the medals
the Silver War Badge was also awarded to men
whose only service was in the U.K. It
was worn on the lapel to show people that
the man had done his duty and to avoid him
being called a coward or a shirker. |

Labour Units
It is impossible to be
completely accurate about the honours and awards to
men who served in Labour units. This is partly due
to transcription errors made during the war,
instances when an immediate award made in the field
was not recorded correctly and because of the
transient nature of the Labour Corps. Many men,
particularly officers, only served for a short time
in the Corps and it is not always possible to tell
whether the award relates to the man's time with the
Labour Corps or another regiment
.
